Unusual Orchestra Plays Jazz With Odd Time Signatures

Los Angeles trumpeter Don Ellis leads a 21 member band that embraces unusual meters. On March 12 he will perform on Shirley MacLaine’s CBS special, playing Sweet Georgia Brown in shifts from the familiar tempo to seven beat measures. Ellis, a Boston University and UCLA trained innovator, formed the Hindustani Jazz Sextette with Hari Har Ron before evolving to a big band. He notes the odd meters are a color of music not a gimmick, aimed at changing how Americans listen to rhythm. Ellis rebuilt his group with younger players better suited to irregular rhythms after veteran session musicians struggled with seven and nine beat measures.
