Syrian Push Brings Reforms In Lebanon
Syrian pressure aligns Lebanese leaders behind reforms proposed by President Suleiman Franjieh to end the civil war. After talks with Foreign Minister Khaddam, some radical Palestinian groups toned down opposition while others rejected the plan. Kamal Jumbre? remained cautious. PFLP leaders met in Damascus praising peacemaking efforts. The reforms keep Lebanon’s sectarian balance with a Maronite president, a Sunni premier, and a Shiite speaker.
