Democrats To Eye Trade Legislation
Washington AP reports Nixon seeks rapid Congress approval for a dollar devaluation backed trade bill while some Democrats demand scrutiny of follow up measures. House Ways and Means and Senate Banking committees plan hearings next week and in two weeks respectively as Mills and Patman push for emergency action with cautious stance on import surcharges and wage price controls.

First Prisoners Back In US At Bedsides Of Ailing Mothers
Two released American prisoners of war reached home soil at San Diego area hospitals after a long flight from the Philippines. Navy Cmdr. Brian D. Woods and Air Force Maj. Glendon W. Perkins, both with gravely ill mothers, landed at Miramar. Technical landing problems briefly challenged the plane but both men appeared healthy and grateful. Woods praised the American people and service, while Perkins thanked prayers and the nation, then reunited with wives and families as they prepared to travel to Minnesota and Alabama for further reunions. About 100 spectators, mainly newsmen, greeted the arrivals at Miramar with a low key reception.

Penn Central seeks to drop passenger trains nationwide
Penn Central, the nation's largest railroad now in federal bankruptcy, asked a judge to drop virtually all passenger service in 16 states to cut losses, retaining only NYC area commuter routes. It also seeks to abandon about a quarter of its 20 000 miles of freight lines in 14 states and two Canadian provinces, as part of a broader reorganization. A planned cut of 5,700 freight train crew jobs faces a union dispute unresolved after a brief nationwide strike halted by Congress.
