FTC Charges Credit Terms Not Disclosed
The FTC accuses Montgomery Ward & Co. and Spiegel Inc. of deceiving customers about credit terms in violations of the Truth in Lending Act. The proposed complaint cites undisclosed finance charge calculations, three day cancellation rights on home improvement loans, and improper credit life insurance sales, with Spiegel also failing to disclose payment deadlines and finance charge methods. The firms may seek a voluntary settlement, or face a formal decision after a hearing.
