IRS Chief To Face Grand Jury Over Tax Agency Probes
Treasury Secretary William E. Simon said IRS Commissioner Donald C. Alexander and other top IRS officials will testify before a federal grand jury next week on an unspecified matter tied to investigations at the agency. He noted Treasury investigations have been launched and shared with Congress and the Justice Department, including probes into Alexander blocking audits of Sen. Joseph Montoya and possible favored treatment of Rep. Al Ullman. Alexander had suspended the Bahamian bank inquiry Project Haven to check for tainted evidence, a move now lifted as cases proceed.
