Ships on route to Haiphong as mines delay talks
Washington reports nearly a dozen Communist cargo ships heading for North Vietnam or Chinese ports awaiting clearance to Haiphong once minefields are removed. A U.S. Navy mine task force led by Rear Adm. Brian McCauley planned talks with North Vietnamese officials on mine removal and resupply routes. Evidence suggests continued Soviet and Chinese support, with about 160,000 tons of supplies landed in China for North Vietnam in January, much of it routed by land through South China. The cease fire allows North Vietnam unlimited aid but South Vietnam cannot be resupplied except on a restricted basis.
