Wallace Fails To Get Alabama Delegates Bound
MONTGOMERY Ala AP Gov George C Wallace failed to bind Alabama's Democratic National Convention delegates as a legislative filibuster killed the bill. The measure would have required delegates to back the state winner in the presidential primary. Wallace faced a rival plan to keep delegates free to choose. Bailes proposed a primary with free delegates, which Wallace rejected by phone while campaigning in Florida. Pelham called the compromise a popularity contest.
