Pierce Hopes Refutation Ends PSC Controversy
Jefferson City Missouri Public Service Commissioner A Robert Pierce hopes his refutation of unfounded charges by Governor Teasdale will end weeks of controversy. He argues rate hikes stem from rising operating costs and inflation, not PSC action, and notes four of five commissioners refused to resign. He contemplates lawsuits or inquiries but aims to finish the dispute quickly.

Federal agency reallocates surplus gas amid eastern shortages
The Federal Power Commission announced a surplus gas transfer to Transcontinental Gas Line Corp in Houston for distribution along the gas starved eastern seaboard from North Carolina to New York. About 150000 cubic feet daily was intended for Washington and Oregon, with possible substitution from other fuels or stored gas. The FPC said rationing would target low priority users toward high priority customers and allowed interstate pipelines to buy from more expensive intrastate pipelines in Texas and elsewhere. Prices could reach up to 3 per thousand cubic feet without prior approval, and some swapped gas from Oregon and Washington has ranged to 2.75 per thousand. The allocation represented only a small fraction of the nearly 100 billion cubic feet burned daily nationwide this winter. The regular interstate price ceiling remains 1.44, while intrastate gas sometimes sold within production states for as much as 225 before the emergency.

Slight flood threat from snowmelt, experts say
Experts expect only a slight flood risk from snowmelt unless thawing is paired with warm rain. National Weather Service officials say rivers should handle the melt with most rising to flood stages but few overflows expected. The Northeast faces the greatest risk, especially along the Ohio and Kanawha rivers, while Army Corps of Engineers notes below normal reservoir levels reduce danger though ice floes could cause issues.
