Social Programs Take 25 Percent of GNP
Denis F. Johnston reports from Social Indicators 1976 that social programs now consume over 25 percent of GNP, doubling from 25 years ago, yet Americans show greater willingness to fund social initiatives. A 1973 poll found 53.8 percent opposed welfare funding, falling to 45.2 percent in 1975, while majorities favor health, crime reduction, addiction control, environment protection, and education over broader social spending.
