Nixon Aides Cite Postal and Draft Reforms as Early Achievements
Washington based aides say postal and draft reforms lead two-year gains for the Nixon administration. They praise desegregation progress, improved minority employment, and a calmer urban mood while criticizing Congress for stalled welfare, revenue sharing, and appropriations bills. Foreign policy gains include Viet Nam shift, Nixon Doctrine peace strategy, and START talks.

Suspects Taken In Kidnap Kill Case Near Montreal
Three prime suspects in the Pierre Laporte kidnapping and murder were arrested at a farmhouse near St Duc, 20 miles southeast of Montreal. Paul Rose, Jacques Rose, and Francis Simard were captured with a fourth unidentified man after a light in a likely empty farmhouse led police to them. A 20 foot tunnel beneath the cement floor stocked with provisions suggested they could have hidden for weeks. Laporte was abducted Oct. 10 and found slain a week later. The Quebec Liberation Front demanded ransom and political prisoners, while Prime Minister Trudeau imposed wartime measures to pursue the abductors.
