Day Care Centers Grow For Elderly In Community Care
Minnie Smith, 76, credits an Atlanta day care center with restoring her sense of self as centers for the elderly expand nationwide. About 50 centers exist in 20 states with federal grants backing expansion. Programs aim to keep seniors out of nursing homes, offering meals, activities, and paid light work but face resistance from newcomers. Levindale Hebrew Geriatric Center in Baltimore operates one program, charging $12 daily per person, funded by fees, grants, and nursing home support.
