Philip Morris conducted extensive tests across thousands of smokers to compare MERIT with leading low tar brands. Tests found MERIT delivered equal or better taste than cigarettes up to 60 percent higher tar. By late 1977, three quarters of MERIT smokers came from high tar brands, marking a breakthrough in low tar flavor.
