Martinsburg Bank Building Completes 1967 Expansion

The modern brick Martinsburg bank building with drive in facilities finished in 1967 now holds about 4 million dollars in assets, up from 1.2 million when the new building opened. Cashier Robert Bachmann, in office since December 1966, notes 80 percent of local business is farmers. The independently owned bank traces to 1871, with a succession of Fennawald family cashiers before Bachmann. Bachmann chairs the city park steering committee and serves as a city alderman.

Martinsburg Chronicle of Pride and Progressive Ties

Martinsburg's long history as a railroad town in Audrain County is explored, highlighting farmers, livestock, and a Catholic heritage. The piece details key local industries including Fennewald Fertilizer, Slater and Fowles Elevator, MFA Plant Foods, and Farmers Elevator Co., plus historic sites like the old depot and jail. It notes shortages in fertilizer, fuel, and materials, the push for a small new industry, and profiles leaders such as Mayor Lawrence Arens and postmaster Carl Paschang, with a look at longstanding businesses like Friedman Picture Framing Co. and the N. W. Friedman Co.
