Connally Named Treasury Secretary in Nixon Bid to Stall Critics
President Nixon tapped former Texas Governor John B. Connally as Treasury secretary to bolster support for his economic policies amid 1972 campaign, replacing David M. Kennedy who resigns Feb. 1. Connally, a conservative Democrat, brings political chops to a post often held by bankers, with Kennedy reassigned as ambassador at large. The move drew mixed reactions from governors and lawmakers, with Texas seen as pivotal in 1972.
