Weather brief notes show a winter storm watch for Missouri with rain turning to snow in the northwest. Temperatures near 40 to 50 today and around 30 Sunday, extended outlook light precipitation early week. Also reported are hospital admissions in Mexico and surrounding towns, births, discharges, and a safety incident with minor vehicle damage in Montgomery County.

United Mine Workers construction crews threaten to close more mines in coming days if a contract is not approved. About 32,000 UMW miners refused to cross picket lines, with 4,500 union members in mine construction involved. The bargaining council had rejected travel pay and seniority protections, prolonging idle miners in Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Bethlehem Steel plans to recall 1,400 idled workers, while 1,700 remain out until coal flow normalizes.
The White House and State Department offered no comment on reports that Elliot L. Richardson will be named ambassador to Britain. Richardson, a Republican who resigned as attorney general in 1973 amid Watergate turmoil, previously served as undersecretary of state. The London post has been vacant since October after Walter Annenberg’s resignation.
In Jefferson City AP reports a 1975 session move to update the state constitution with a repeal of the separate schools clause after voters approval. The first two weeks of December saw 600-plus bills including school funding reform and tax relief proposals, with PSC rate regulation and charitable tax exemptions debated.
Poplar Bluff Missouri officials say a downtown department store laden with more than 100000 in merchandise suffered 500000 in damage after a general alarm fire. Three firefighters were injured as the blaze began in an empty tavern and spread to the store. The Poplar Bluff Fire Department fought the flames for nearly five hours with four pumpers and a snarkle unit before control was gained.
Mrs Stella Clarene Hall 73 of Montgomery City died Friday at Coldwell Nursing Home in Mexico. Funeral services 2 p m Sunday at Montgomery City Christian Church with Rev Thomas Smith officiating. Burial in Montgomery City Cemetery. Call Schlanker Funeral Home after 3 p m today. Born June 29 1901 in Montgomery County daughter of Charles and Cynthina Clare Porter. Married Galin Hall July 14 1926 he died Sept 4 1952. Survived by two daughters Betty Hagood North Little Rock Ark Joyce White High Hill seven grandchildren four great grandchildren. A brother and an infant son preceded her in death. Charter member of Montgomery City Christian Church.
Pulitzer Prize winning columnist Walter Lippmann died at 85 in his Park Avenue apartment after a long illness. He was honored two months earlier with New York City's Bronze Medal of Honor. Lippmann's influence was such that foreign offices studied his reports as closely as ambassadors.
Funeral services for Ophir R. Vanskike 81 of Shelbyville will be Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church. He died at New Laughlin Hospital Kirksville Thursday. He was father of Claude Vanskike Mexico and Mrs Wilford Pickett Columbia formerly of Mexico. He lived in Shelbyville most of his life. Survivors include grandsons Dwayne Rance and Mark Vanskike all of Mexico.

Houston osteopathic surgeon Dr. G W Tompson, 67, died after a lengthy illness. He was born to W M and Sallie Ware Tompson, married to Edith Davis, and survived by two children, seven grandchildren, two sisters, and several brothers and siblings. A Mexico High School and William Jewell College graduate, he practiced in Houston since about 1945 and returned for his class reunion. Twin daughters born today to Luman T Wilkerson and wife at Audrain Medical Center.
The Fed reported industrial output fell 2.3 percent in November, the steepest monthly drop in over four years, with the 24 day coal strike intensifying the decline. Output slid across durable and nondurable goods, signaling rising unemployment while December prospects remained weak. Auto sales in early December dropped 28.8 percent year over year, as oil prices rose 3.9 percent globally. Amstar and four refiners cut wholesale sugar prices, the third cut in two weeks.
In Washington AP report Judge John J. Sirica pressed defendant Robert C. Mardian on who conceived the CREEP idea and why Nixon's re election effort didn’t use the RNC. Mardian linked origins to 1952 Eisenhower organization while denying five conspiracy acts and saying his role was limited to civil suits response. Church Farm Inmate Has Short Stay.
The Center for Short-Lived Phenomena, part of the Smithsonian, warns of a canine distemper outbreak among raccoons in Massachusetts with cases traced to Boston by August and spread to other areas, while England faces bark-stripping by African crested porcupines escaped in 1972. Hodgson's porcupine also damages Norway spruce in Devonshire, with a mature pair captured amid fears of further offspring.
Channel 12 in Mexico will air Christmas programs from local schools next week at 5:30 p.m. McMillan, Hawthorne, Eugene Field, and Mexico High School will be shown in sequence. Each program may be repeated the next day at noon if possible.

Jefferson City Missouri AP reports Robert L. James resigned as commissioner of administration effective next Monday. He will stay on Gov Christopher Bond's staff for another month to aid the transition to a new administrator. James will transfer to the governor's office payroll December 16 and direct the Office of Administration during the transition.
