Rural Schools Face Problems In Attaining AA Status

JEFFERSON CITY State Board of Education requires class A schools to reach AA classification by 1978 with two main hurdles small enrollment and funding. Coffey school in Daviess County faces closure, prompting rural leaders to protest. AA standards demand 40 percent high school credits, special education, counselors, and broader programs. Some districts support the change while others fear tax limits and funding gaps. Otterville in Cooper County switched to AA with strong community and board backing. A birth notice for Travis Lee Morris is included.

Midwest States Plan More Frugality With Road Salt

States across the Midwest and Northeast seek to use less road salt this winter to save costs and curb environmental impact. Vermont pushes for bare and safe roads. Illinois and others report significant cuts from 1969 levels, with Maine and Michigan targeting further reductions. Some officials defend salt as essential, but Ohio and Kansas emphasize applying just enough. Alternatives like sand mixtures face freezing challenges.
