Charge Dismissed in Missouri Lobbyist Case at Jefferson City
In Jefferson City Missouri Cole County Magistrate Randall Waltz dismissed charges against Virginia Burmeister president of the Missouri State Teachers Association and eight others for failing to file a lobbyist activity and expenditure report. The case marks the first use of the revised 1965 lobbyist law enforcement by Dawdy and the state. The hearing noted Burmeister registered but did not lobby while prosecutors argued registration itself obligates disclosure. Meanwhile a Chicago counterfeiting crackdown netted four arrests and about 380000 in fake twenty dollar bills with a printing operation seized at a Chicago area firm and a garage.

Missouri Crops in Worse Shape
The Missouri Crop Reporting Service said crops deteriorated last week for the first time since drought ridden 1975. Soil moisture was 100 percent short in some areas as soybeans dropped blooms and leaves yellowed. Corn shortages hit the north, west and central regions while grain sorghum neared 14 percent mature. The third alfalfa cutting was 73 percent complete and pastures worsened, especially in the northeast and eastern areas.
