Nixon sees progress toward peace in Vietnam and Mid East
President Nixon, in a taped TV interview, expressed hope that U.S. involvement in Vietnam could move to peace with troop withdrawals and South Vietnam replacing them. He also saw some hope for the Middle East cease fire, warned against over optimism, and declined to comment on a U S Soviet peace keeping force under UN auspices. He noted no new U S initiatives, said negotiations are flexible, and remains unsure about a running mate for 1972 while praising Spiro Agnew.

Amendment Backers See Moral Victory in Vietnam War Vote
In Washington the Senate weighs an amendment to end U.S. involvement in Vietnam by 1972. Backers say the measure is a moral victory and a test of Congress versus the White House, while opponents warn it could disrupt Vietnamization and prolong the war. The plan would reduce troops to 280,000 by next April and bar funds for new combat after that, with a 60 day presidential suspension window.
