Missouri Governor calls Sept 22 extra session on transit tax
Jefferson City lawmakers clash over a $500000 price tag for a special session to push a one half cent sales tax extension for mass transit in St. Louis and Kansas City. Gov Bond sets Sept 22 start while House Speaker Rabbitt and Senate President Pro Tem Cason oppose a late-session move. They say the extension should come in January during the regular session, expedited with an emergency clause. Both leaders argue time is insufficient for prompt passage and fear political optics. The tax would need to take effect before year end and likely require a two thirds emergency clause vote. The governor denies delaying tactics and says no other measures are planned for the extra session. Continued in Page 4.
