Quang Tri City Ground to Dust in Vietnam War
AP Special Correspondent Peter Arnett portrays Quang Tri as a ruined riverside city of 80,000 once thriving in Vietnam. Marine and paratroop casualties exceed a thousand in 25 days as both sides shell and assault. The North Vietnamese hold five strongpoints while Marines defend battered ruins and a citadel, with daily shelling around 1,000 rounds. The conflict grinds on with no clear forward momentum, as officers from Thu Duc and Hanoi face grim destinies in a city that seems to swallow lives.
