Nixon Deposition Claims Tape Publicness Yet Protects Family

In a deposition made public Nixon said he would release presidential tape recordings as promptly as possible but would let himself and family decide what to disclose. The session, July 25 at a Coast Guard station near San Clemente, covered over six hours as Nixon argued secrecy is essential to decision making despite the desire for openness. A separate briefing notes a Ralph Nader linked group urging FDA to warn diabetics that certain pills raise heart disease risk and push for full informed consent before prescribing controversial drugs. The FDA and drug companies face blame for delays in stronger warnings, while Upjohn opposes sweeping labeling changes as inappropriate.

Eleven members of Teamsters Local 600 sue the Motor Carriers Council of St Louis and others in U S District Court alleging violations of the National Labor Relations Act. They seek 20000 for each of 6400 members claiming the council barred bargaining for work rule concessions until the union paid at least 700000 of 58 million awarded last year. The suit argues the union cannot meet the garnishment while the council pressures payment to cover damages from a 1970 strike. Ted Welch warns the union could be financially ruined by week’s end without help.
