Israel says three West Bank camps were illegal
Washington reports the Carter administration criticizes three new Israeli camps as illegal acts that hinder talks toward peace. Israel denies the claim, calling negotiations ongoing. U.N. Secretary General Waldheim and U.S. officials voiced regrets and noted concerns over extended West Bank regulations. Begin authorized the settlements, aiming to placate conservatives, with 79 settlements today housing about 5,000 Israelis.
