Atom Power Keeps Woman’s Heart Beating

Virginia Recupero, a 53-year-old Key West grandmother, becomes the first American woman to receive an atomic powered pacemaker at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami. The device, about 2.4 inches wide, costs roughly 5500 dollars and requires replacement only every 10 years, unlike conventional pacemakers. The surgeon said there are radioactivity risks only in accidents and predicted broader use as supply grows and costs drop. Recupero previously had open heart surgery and wore a conventional pacemaker for two years.
