Hearing Today To Restrain Massive Busing

In Jackson County Circuit Court an informal hearing was set today on a suit by Independence to block the Kansas City School District desegregation plan aimed at extending pupil busing. The petition seeks an immediate restraining order to halt forced busing in Independence’s western area, where about 5,200 pupils attend KC schools. If granted, a full hearing would decide the plan’s legality, with Independence city attorney James S. Cottingham stating the plan shifts children as “pawns” and wastes tax money. The district’s busing scheme, pushed by the board under Justice Department pressure, faces federal standards questions and awaits congressional action.
