Missouri primaries widen races for Congress seats
In Missouri several key districts saw close primaries. Incumbents and hopefuls contended in the 2nd District with Robert A. Young defeating Jack Schramm for the Democratic nomination while Rep. Robert C. Snyder edged Bob Chase in the GOP race. In the 6th District Morgan Maxfield and Charles Broomfield traded spending blows as Maxfield advanced to face E. Thomas Coleman. Other results filled out the slate across the state, with Gephardt winning the Democratic nomination in the 3rd, and Volkmer and other incumbents advancing. In Washington, Rear Adm. Samuel L. Gravely Jr. was named for promotion to vice admiral and given command of a U.S. fleet, becoming the first black admiral nominated to three-star rank.
