Marine Private Coffer completes recruit training in San Diego
Marine Private Lawrence E. Coffer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence M. Coffer of Route 2, finished an 11 week recruit training cycle at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego Calif. He learned battlefield survival daily routine personal standards first aid rifle marksmanship and close order drill. Emphasis was on teamwork and self discipline. A Hazen High School Renton Wash alumnus he joined the Marine Corps in March 1976.

Coast Guard Cutter Rush Aids Japanese Vessel Off Alaska
Lieutenant Edward G. Karst son of Mr and Mrs A L Karst of Jonesburg serves aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Rush. On a routine fisheries patrol off the Aleutian Islands the Tune Maru suffered a broken propeller shaft and Karst’s crew towed and escorted her 240 miles to Adak Island for emergency repairs. The Bush sailed from Alameda for a seven week Alaskan patrol to enforce fishing laws. Karst is a 1965 IIT graduate, joined the Coast Guard in February 1966.
