No Turkish Pact With Arms Embargo
Turkish Premier Demirel said Turkey cannot negotiate a new defense pact with the United States while the U S arms embargo remains tied to Turkey over Cyprus. He noted the 1969 agreement is dead and any future talks would determine a new defense relationship or remove U S bases if talks fail. Ford offered 50 million in aid to reopen bases, which Demirel rejected, stressing this is a question of Turkish American relations and friendships.
