Senate Tax Bill Lets 47 Million Pay Less in 1970s

The Senate passed a bill to raise standard deductions and simplify returns, benefiting 47 million filers. It would cut taxes for most nonitemizers, with larger cuts for those earning under $20,000, including a family of four earning $10,000 saving about $205. The measure, 73 to 7, keeps two individual and one business credits, extends 1975 tax cuts, and adds a $250 credit for keeping a dependent over 65 at home, plus incentives for business investment and hiring.
