Portuguese Moderates Win Landslide Vote
Portugal's moderate parties won a landslide victory in the constitutional assembly election, led by Mario Soares and the Socialist Party with about 38 percent. The centrists Popular Democrats and Center Social Democrats joined to form a 4-1 lead over the Communists, signaling a possible opening for moderation within the ruling military structure and improved Western ties. The Socialists secured roughly 125 of 247 seats with 38.06 percent of the vote, while the Communist front held about 23 seats. Officials hailed the vote as a democratic triumph amid a backdrop of military rule and shifting allegiances.
