The Commerce Department reports March imports exceeded exports by 171.3 million, pushing the U S trade balance into deficit for the first time in 10 months. Oil import costs rose 17 percent, offsetting gains in overall trade as exports climbed 0.9 percent and imports rose 6.1 percent to just under 7.85 billion dollars.
President Nixon told a Jackson crowd he sees the downturn bottoming and forecasts a rebound in the latter half of the year. He blamed food and energy for price rises, highlighted autos and housing as weak spots, and promised programs to boost housing. Steven Hendricks 22 of Route 3 Mexico was treated at Audrain Medical Center for an accidental gunshot wound to his foot. He told deputies he was cleaning his 30-30 Marlin rifle when it fired, the bullet passing through his shoe and foot at his home around 2 p.m. The shooting is being investigated.
