Solar pond home of the future designed by Ames architect

Iowa architect Ray D. Crites designs a $125,000 farmstead at Living History Farms near Des Moines. The 3471 square foot home uses 20 percent of the energy of a conventional house, includes a tornado shelter and two greenhouses, and relies on a domed solar pond to store heat. The project, aided by a $17,000 Iowa Energy Policy Council grant, seeks private donations for construction and rests partly below grade with earth terraces.
