State's Car Owners May Pay More Taxes

Missouri governors commission on energy conservation debated car tax ideas during a two day meeting in Columbia. While rejecting a $200 surtax on low efficiency cars an air conditioned car tax and a higher state gasoline tax the panel endorsed a graduated car tax up to $300 based on federal mileage ratings starting next year to be paid at purchase. They also backed higher license fees tied to horsepower over three to four years and a policy to buy high mileage American made cars. The plan aims to reduce energy use by 5 percent in 1980 and qualify for federal funds. funds would go to general revenue not rebates.
