Newport R I Aug 1 The yachts Columbia and Defender started a 26 mile race to a Block Island mark and back. At about 12 05 Columbia’s new steel mast failed. sails were lost and the race was abandoned. No one hurt. Tugboats moved in as Defenders helped and Columbia towed to Newport after wreckage cleared five miles south of Point Judith.
