In Elizabeth New Jersey police continue to search for clues in the William J. Clark murder case. A muddy pair of socks and a hammer are cited as the most tangible links to the crime. Clark's wife, out on bail, again denies involvement and says she did not conspire with Joseph Gowen to elope.
Clearing skies and a promise that torrential rains have passed finds Texas assessing losses from a week of downpours. No crop loss estimate yet. Five lives were lost when a truck carrying African Americans was swept from a Georgetown area causeway into the San Gabriel River. bodies unrecovered. Houston telephone service crippled. streets in bad condition.
Commander De Pinedo, Italian aviator, landed on the banks of the Tiber in Rome this afternoon, completing a round trip to Tokyo totaling 34,000 miles. He is said to have set a record for distance on a solo flight as thousands greet him under Mussolini and the Fascist government.
Mrs C C Sargent leaves for Waco and is honored by the Women's Missionary Society of the First Christian Church. At Mrs Carl Davis's home 603 East Hunt Street four tables of qa were played with guests in attendance. The gift from the society was a plaque "Appeal to the Great Spirit." Refreshments included fruit salad wafers sandwiches baked peanuts and hot tea served on bamboo trays. Twenty four members attended.
Austin November 7 The Texas Tax Assessors Association elected C. G. Hickox of Dallas president for next year and selected Houston as the meeting place for the forthcoming session.
Employes and about 50 guests enjoyed a noon barbecue in the Mexia warehouse adjoining the office on South Belknap street. E N Wilson district superintendent acted as master of ceremonies, serving pork and mutton barbecue with potatoes pickles and cheese. After lunch guests were treated to cigars apples and other goodies and some stayed for tennis on the company courts.
Rev McKinney opens a multi week revival at First Christian Church with J Arthur Bryant from Paris as singer. McKinney leads evangelistic sermons as the congregation backs efforts to recruit large attendance and form a large choir for nightly services. A week of silent prayer preceded the event.
Grammar school pupils receive a year’s free library membership for reading eight books during vacation. The list includes Dahlia Robbing, Daphne Denton, Mauraline Vestal, Virginia Moore, Agnes Ward, Bernice Ward, Charles Price, Katheryn Franke Lula, May Norton, Gordon Mills, Minnie Lon Matthews, Elizabeth Huke, Charlie Mensies, Dorothy Harrison, Katheryn Easton, George Tidwell and James Cling.
Arlington Baptist Church members near Fort Worth face infighting as plans for an Armistice Day program with minister Rev. Thornton Plaine draw tension. A faction seeks an injunction to bar his entry while two opposing members clashed on the church rostrum this week.
Attorney and Texas poet Ben B. Hunt, a prominent Mexia Daily News contributor, earned international recognition as his poem A Pilgrimage to Arlington was selected for The Literary Digest front page. The work first appeared locally on October 11 and drew praise from Poetry Society of Texas officers and leading national figures.
The Boy Scouts of Troop 3 met at Central Presbyterian church Friday evening with 19 scouts and one visitor. Assistant scoutmaster Raymond L. Dillard led the meeting while Scoutmaster Rev. W. K. Aubrey was absent due to a men’s banquet. The session included songs games and play practice and a collection for the building fund followed a patrol leader conference.
Five bandits robbed a cigar factory employer in Detroit. A patrolman was shot and wounded. the robbers escaped with $10,000. The officer is expected to recover.
Reverend Murray A. Travis of Fairview will be the principal speaker for Armistice Day observances November 11 in Groesbeck. The Limestone County leader, a former YMCA worker, will discuss Americanism at the high school auditorium after a morning program including music by the high school orchestra and choral clubs.
Jaques Blevins former president of Southern Motors Company and seven others were convicted of mail fraud. Blevins received three years in prison and a ten thousand dollar fine. Other defendants faced suspended sentences and fines ranging from 250 to 1000 dollars.
Dr John A Held pastor of the First Baptist Church will start a Business Men Bible Class Sunday at 9 30 in the Liontarian Inn Palestine street near Sherman. The class aims to be a democratic gathering and open to all businessmen not affiliated with other Sunday schools.
Texas sits atop the Southwestern Conference standings following a 13 to 0 win over Baylor while Texas A&M drops after a loss to TCU. Texas still faces key games against A&M and Rice as the race narrows with TCU and Rice in contention.
