New York reports Mary Lewis of Little Rock Arkansas climbs from a Dallas Methodist church choir to lead opera roles. Age twenty five, she ran away to join a traveling show, was a former Follies chorus girl, and debuted in Vienna after a year of study.
Attorney General Dan Moody prepares additional suits against Hoffman Construction and Sherman-Youmans Construction after filing against American Road Company. He seeks return of 650000 in alleged excess profits and seeks receivership. Proceedings include a preliminary hearing within ten days and ongoing state investigations into highway contracts.
Dallas action on November 11 features Hub Hollis led Paris Junior College meeting Timmy Stewart’s Huskies at Ownby Stadium. Both teams enter the clash with strong freshmen rosters, expected to draw a full crowd under lights as the Colts showcase early season form.
Josephine Depew, 15, of Chelsea, is hospitalized in Tulsa with both legs amputated below the knees after falling while climbing between freight cars as a train started. She was brought to Tulsa in the engine due to Chelsea lacking a hospital.
Special to The News from College Station reports plans for the 50th birthday of the A&M College of Texas to be celebrated in October 1925. President T C Walton has named committees to arrange master reunion events. The celebration will showcase exhibits, relics, and mementos from every class, drawing more alumni than any previous fair.
Senator William H. King of Utah will push a new congress to probe the office of the alien property custodian and its handling of property seized during the war valued at 500 million dollars. He plans to introduce a bill for this purpose and to return all alien property still held with the accounting stewardship of the custodian.
The Marlin High School Bulldogs travel to Nowlin Park to face the Blackcats in a muddy, rain soaked annual football game slated for 3:30. Heavy week rain preserves a doubtful outcome as Mexia’s backs struggle in the churned field while Marlin’s line may gain an edge. A big crowd is expected amid ongoing Conference A action across the district with Hillsboro Corsicana and Waco High contenders in contention as Thanksgiving moves two teams closer to decision.
Special to the News College Station Texas November 6 A single White Leghorn hen from the Alex Stewart Ranch Santa Cruz California is named champion egg layer in the district east of the Rockies after the Eighth Texas National Egg Laying Contest at A M College of Texas. Hen No 528 laid 315 eggs in the last 12 months the top total in the district and second only to a national record. The Ninth Texas national Egg Laying Contest began November 1 with 110 entries from twelve states.
In Dallas on November 6 a Black man believed mentally ill was fatally wounded by police after resisting arrest and attempting to shoot. The incident occurred in the Black section after several days of terrorizing activity. Mrs. Wynn Higgins returned from Celeste after visiting relatives.
G L Crawford district agent extension work AEM College commends Mexia fair for strong turnout and learning focus. He notes exhibits were good and local farming people eager to learn, urging a complete survey of the section and offering backing. He calls the fair a model for agricultural progress.
Kosse High School students voted to name the athletic clubs the Greyhounds. Paul Allen of the senior class submitted the chosen name as the best fit, reflecting the Kosse teams. The vote occurred at a Kosse High School assembly on a Thursday in November.
In New York City the Follies Revue presents Animated Dolls on Saturday night November 14 at the Ma jestic. Eva Schiel of the high school physical education department will present French Spanish Dutch and Negro animated dolls in lifelike stunts with a jumping jack. The girls glee club directed by Mrs. Strange will debut that evening in new uniforms with Bobby Nichols as pianist.
The House Ways and Means Committee moved to further reduce income taxes in the new revenue bill with additional cuts agreed in both branches.
A large Mexia De Molay group with 50 drill and repree members heads to Waco Saturday for the state DeMolay teams contest. A parade feature will use a giant caterpillar as the centerpiece while spectacular stunts are promised. At a ceremonial night 111 new members joined, bringing the total near 100. Oran Arrington assists the order in preparations.
A Ford car stolen from P. J. Bounds in Mexia was found after three months of searching across the state. Chief A. R. Mace and Welch Motor Co aided the recovery, locating the vehicle near Nacogdoches and the alleged thief is held in Hillsboro jail.
At midnight the foot and mouth disease quarantine covering 19 counties was lifted and shipments in and out of the area resumed. Dr Marion Imes, federal expert in charge of the cattle plague fight, said no new evidence of the disease had appeared and it was now safe to lift the ban.
At Ballston New York on November 6 a family tragedy left Geo Kemp his wife and four of their five children dead as a fire swept a Ballston residence destroying the home in a morning blaze. The sole survivor was a five year old child rescued from the ruins. Authorities investigated the cause of the fire, while neighbors and fire crews fought the flames.
Edgar Pew of the American Petroleum Institute and Sun Oil vice president will speak at the Lions Club Oil Men's Day luncheon in Mexia next Tuesday. C. V. Terrell of the Texas Railroad Commission to be principal speaker. 34 of 90 invited have replied yes. Noel Hellingsworth chairs the program with John Sweatt and Barnes Brailes on the committee.
Coast guards race to reach the disabled steamer Hamonic with 25 men aboard off Caribou Island as radio dispatches fail and peril is feared. Nearby the steamer Williams Roberts drifts off Alpena in Lake Huron amid seasonal storms. Also mentions the Beavers returning from Dallas.
Eastern Texas and Louisiana endured heavy rains described as cloudbursts with towns isolated and bridges out. Beaumont traffic halted as trains backed up. rice crops sustained major damage and several towns lost train service, with Mexia reporting 1.73 inches in 24 hours.
In Dallas on November 5 Mrs J P Robinson regretted not finishing the act after a jury found Jim Kimbro guilty of manslaughter in the death of Palmer Robinson. She attempted to shoot Kimbro in court but the gun misfired and was captured by guards.
Mayor J. Sandford Smith city engineer R. D. Morgan and Fire Chief Pittman met in Austin with the Fire Commission to push for a reduction in the key insurance rate. The city says it complied with requirements for a major cut and hopes for a favorable decision from the trip.
Federal officials report trunks of narcotics valued at 100000 seized in Vancouver as part of a German Hamburg arrest. The large smuggling scheme shipped narcotics from Germany via Canada and back into the country. An Ohio man lost his age cranking his auto in a windy downtown scene.
