Mexia set to host a Buddy Poppy Sale this Saturday under the Lancaster Post 4694 Auxiliary. Mayor Hitt lauds VFW efforts funding aid for needy and disabled veterans and recalls local veterans who sacrificed their lives.
Part of 7.5 million in negotiable Treasury certificates vanished last March from the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank may be in a Swiss numbered account. Investigators allege two men deposited several large denominations including one over a million dollars in Switzerland. The State Department seeks to lift banking secrecy to verify if these certificates match those missing. The certificates matured May 15 and carry no interest. seven each valued at 1 million and five at 100 thousand.
Farrar church wrapped up revival Sunday night with a single baptism Marvin Lee Harrington. Preacher Bro. Ivy delivered strong sermons and drew large nightly crowds. Many locals joined memorial gatherings at New Hope and visiting families from Pasadena Gilmer Tiger Prairie Houston and Dallas attended weekend events.
A bus carrying passengers from Santa Fe New Mexico to Clovis and Santa Fe overturned nine miles south of Snyder Texas during a wind and rain storm. Miss Margo Dawn Gerber 18 of Santa Fe died in the crash and 16 others were injured. All aboard were taken to a Snyder hospital. The driver Newt Holt of Lubbock Texas sustained chest injuries.
Tehuacana activity centers on a Friday shower and a fire risk drought easing with light rain. Residents attend music recitals in Mexia and Wortham, with summer school and bacalaureate events noted in Coolidge Mexia and Mexia graduates from the town. Local families visit relatives in Corsicana Paducah Disney and Victoria.
Dr Ralph W Steen president of Stephen F Austin College in Nacogdoches will deliver the address at Mexia High School commencement Friday at 8 PM in the city auditorium. A Clyde native he earned a BA from Clyde High School, MA and PhD from Texas UT, taught at multiple colleges, and is author of many Texas history works. He serves as Texas State Historical Association president and is married to Gladys Edmonds with one son.
In Austin Sen W T Moore of Bryan moved a congratulatory resolution praising the Texas AGM College board for admitting women. The measure passed by voice vote amid a filibuster by Sen Abraham Karens and a flurry of latey recorded no votes. The House previously urged reconsideration of the decision ending a 92 year tradition.
Millions of New Yorkers jam Broadway in a ticker tape parade for Gordon Cooper after he orbited the earth 22 times. Crowds surged along the Canyon of Heroes as the 20 car motorcade moved from Bowling Green to City Hall with Cooper waving from the rear amid police efforts to clear the way.
