Washington reports say several senators called for legislation to authorize Congress or the President for a government industrial security program affecting about three million workers in private defense plants, which the Supreme Court struck down.
John T. Shewmake, president of Southwestern Electric Service Company based in Dallas, visits Mexia with two company directors and local heads for a personal check on the area economy. Milton Lewis, New York investment security specialist, accompanies. The Dallas firm serves Central and East Texas including Mexia, Marlin, Groesbeck, Fairfield, Mart, Rosebud, Jacksonville, Rusk, Overton, Troup and others.
Funeral services for Charles E. Goolsby 63 of Kirvin were to be held today at 2 40 PM at Kirvin First Baptist Church with Rev T J Seamans leading. Burial followed in Woodland Cemetery Kirvin under Walker Funeral Home Wortham. He died Monday in Temple a WWI veteran survived by his widow three sisters two brothers a stepson and a stepdaughter.
Oia's business houses will close Saturday for Independence Day. Mexia Daily News will not publish July 4. Merchants banks post office to close. White and Gillespie Drugs close by 10 am Kendrick and Horn Drugs by 10:30 am. Service stations remain open to serve travelers.

Mrs. Earl K. Long returns to Louisiana and answers the governors separation suit as doctors report a nervous breakdown and heart trouble. She alleges threats and seeks protective measures while Long faces possible legal probes over a 1956 payment connected to pilots on the Mississippi River.
Washington reports a peacetime deficit likely between 12.5 and 13 billion dollars, pushing the national debt to a new high. Eisenhower aims to balance the 1960 budget, with Congress set to extend war era taxes and maintain corporate rates as talks focus on inflation risk and revenue gaps. Police in Huntsville probe a burglary at the Sam Houston Museum with theft of rare firearms and artifacts from the General’s collection.
Mexia High School expects about 375 students this fall up from 366 last year while 93 students each in ninth and nineteenth grades are forecast. Prairie Hill adds around 20 students. The district plans to revamp the student handbook and to repair interior waterproofing with plaster work and leakage fixes.
A young white Marine, Fred J. Davis, 22, of Atlanta, was convicted by an all white jury in Beaufort South Carolina for raping a 4 year old Black woman and faces the mandatory electric chair sentence. Judge H Henry Johnson planned to pronounce the sentence today. Davis' attorney Ben Carter said he would appeal. He is believed to be the first white man in southern history to be sentenced to death for raping a Black woman.
The White House announced the formal resignation of Secretary of Commerce Lewis L. Strauss effective today.

Ira Ware aged 60 of 1028 South Bonham died Monday at 5 30 pm at his residence after a heart attack He had been ill for weeks Services will be at Corley chapel with burial in Mexia city cemetery He worked for Cargill Inc and had lived in Mexia 15 years Surviving are his widow Mexia a son Ira Edward Ware stationed in Germany a son Henry Ware McGregor two daughters Mrs Dorothy Galaway Waco and Mrs Bilton Sandifer Mexia a sister Mrs Alma Wooton Pust a brother Ray Ware Lovington New Mexico and seven grandchildren He was father of the late Mrs Mildred Twiggs of Mexia who died in August 1955
