The Supreme Court ruled that broadcasters required by law to grant time to political candidates are not subject to libel suits or statements by or about those candidates. The decision clarifies protection for stations in political coverage.
The Texas State Health Department reports 15 new polio cases in the week ending June 20, raising the year to date total to 102 cases.
Polaris conducted a rocket test at Cape Canaveral at 10 42 a m rising through a smoke plume in what appeared to be a successful firing.
President Eisenhower makes a quick trip to New York to see the new Soviet exhibit and to discuss a possible meeting with a top Kremlin official.
The Mexia unit of the Texas National Guard Co E 2nd Battle Group started a two week strenuous summer encampment at North Fort Hood under the 36th Division. Capt Thomas W Cameron leads the unit with Lt James N Wilson and Lt Harvey C Cook among accompanying officers. Several members have long camp histories and the division tests a new atomic age organization with Maj Gen Carl L Phinney promising a tough peacetime training regime running to July 14.

Coleman Hughes, about 45, posted bond for 1000 after surrendering to Freestone County sheriff at Fairfield Saturday evening. He is charged with assault and attempted murder in connection with a nightclub stabbing of Lester Sawyer Teague, who is hospitalized with back wounds. Hughes awaits Limestone County Grand Jury action.

An audit of Freestone County funds shows a shortage of 35576.89 from 1846 through early 1958. The report by A Co Upleger Company of Waco covers 1946 through 1957 and three months of 1958 and was filed with District Judge Williford. County Attorney Hugh D Reed Jr said suit has been filed against the late Compton White’s estate to recover the county funds. White had been county auditor from 1932 until his March 1958 death.
Services for Mary Jane Spurlock 88 were held at the Riddle Chapel with burial in Mexia cemetery. She died in an auto crash on Highway 79 near Oakwood Friday night. survivors include husband Dave Spurlock and children Arthur Audie Grothers and Mrs Jesse McKenlie.
A bill to let the State Hospital Board sell 39 acres in Austin for at least 1.39 million dollars won preliminary House approval on second reading but failed to reach the four fifths vote to suspend rules for immediate final passage. Foreman said the land north of the Austin State Hospital is surplus property. Nearly 21 million babies have been born in the United States during the past five years.
Mrs. Floyd P. Williams of Media died at 2 45 AM Monday in Methodist Hospital Dallas after extended illness. Funeral 3 PM Tuesday at Riddle's Chapel with Rev Cecil Ellis and Charles Williams officiating. Survived by husband two children mother and siblings. burial in Mexia cemetery.
E. L. Knight of Teague was listed in critical condition at Teague City Hospital after a Friday afternoon mowing machine accident near Teague. He fell from the mower, the machine rolled across his chest puncturing a lung, then reached home by tractor before his family drove him to the hospital.
