Congress Takes Tidelands Bill Through House

Bi Stone County Boy Scout Groups Consolidated in Joint District

Limestone and Freestone Boy Scout districts merged at a meeting of leaders from Jack's Creek reunion grounds. Gene Womack of Mexia was elected chairman with George Mulcahy of Teague as vice-chairman. Haze Across Texas Traced to Volcanic Dust from Cape Verde

The U S Weather Bureau tied the Texas haze to volcanic dust from eruptions in the Cape Verde Islands, ongoing since June 12. The plume was seen from Brownsville to Oklahoma City, with Panhandle coolness on a weak front and little temperature change otherwise. Houston Man Dies in Electric Chair for Raping Girl

Morris Bessard, 21, became the third man executed in Texas for the rape of a 16 year old Houston girl. The incident occurred as she sat in a parked car with a 20 year old companion near Houston on May 13, 1949. Two other Black men, Eugene McFarland and Nathaniel Edwards, were executed earlier for the crime.
