Trans Pacific flight bids dodge big prize money

On June 25 at San Francisco reporters noted no pilot would win the $140,000 Pacific prize pool this season. Multiple trans Pacific attempts were planned from San Francisco Honolulu Dallas Seattle and Los Angeles with varied conditions and timelines. Major Livingston Irving and aviator Clare Vance announced efforts while San Francisco officials received inquiries from over 60 aviators. A propeller crack halted Dick Grace’s Hawaii to California attempt forcing a delay. Maitland and Hagenberger preparations began with a projected start on Monday at Crissy Field.

Forest Fire Rages Across Santa Barbara National Forest

A large blaze has burned about 35000 acres of standing timber in the Santa Barbara National Forest and remains out of control. Fire fighters have been drawn from nearby towns to battle the flames as officials fear the fire could threaten Mount Antonio’s heart of the forest if not checked before night.

Mayor Having Enjoyable Time on All-Texas Special Tour

Mexia Mayor J. Sandford Smith spoke to the Mexia Rotary Club praising Texas on the All-Texas Special trip to Buffalo New York. The party of more than 100 Texans traveled Friday and Saturday to promote the state with governor and party members on board.

Governor Dan Moody leads 142 Texans arriving in Buffalo New York for a Good Will tour. The delegation met by the local chamber of commerce planned a day in Buffalo and nearby areas then to Niagara Falls and the New Peace Bridge.

Austin reports final arrangements for Independence Way celebration at University of Texas Memorial Stadium on July 4. Dr. M. R. John Anderson of Frosa claims the district title for long beans by growing exceptionally long specimens. A Kosse report noted a 28 inch bean, but Anderson produced a yard long type at 24 inches and another 30 inch bean.

Wealthy oilman Houston Hughes offers 50 to the Limestone and Freestone counties Boy Scout council to measure youths on Lindbergh like traits. At a private park gathering he cited Coolidge’s address and described a self grading system from July to September with a judging panel to award prizes.

Wealthy Youth Dies and Fortin Crash Near Pottsville

George L. Lambert son of a St. Louis millionaire survived injuries from an air crash that killed J. T. Walker age 21 heir to a $4,000,000 fortune. Both men had just graduated from Princeton and were en route to St. Louis when the plane stalled and went into a tail spin.

Eleven Escape From Kiowa County Jail

Eleven inmates escaped from the Kiowa county jail in Hobart Oklahoma and are believed to have fled into the Texas Panhandle oil region. One man was reported southeast of Hobart as several fugitives carried prison records.

Preacher in K K flogging loses appeal

A Rev A A Davis of Williamson County must serve two years in prison for perjury connected to grand jury testimony during the 1923 Easter Sunday Ku Klux Klan flogging case of R W Burleson. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals overruled a rehearing motion in a ruling by Judge W C Morrow, ending all related prosecutions begun under Governor Dan Moody. Murray Jackson, alleged leader, received five years and was pardoned by Gov Ferguson.

Oklahoma City June 26 Justice closes in on Mat thew Kimes youth outlaw captured Thursday at the Grand Canyon Arizona. Four Killed and Thirty Hurt in Car Collision

Four people died and about 30 were injured in a head on collision between two interurban cars near Dayton. Witnesses say the vehicles met on a curve along a single track during the night. The Dayton and Troy Railroad operated the cars involved.

Battle Over Water Sparks Fifth Bombing Attempt

In Los Angeles on June 25 reports say dynamite was set off to destroy the Los Angeles aqueduct near Lone Pine. The blast failed as a cliff section held, despite guards, machine guns, and searchlights protecting the water supply for over a million people.

Texas Press Chief George Neu Dies at 48

George Neu 48 president of the Texas Press Association and Brenham Banner Press general manager died at Sweetwater hospital after a stroke suffered en route to the state convention in El Paso. He had been elected president while in hospital and was active in Rotary Chamber of Commerce Retail Merchants Association and the Texas Daily Press League.
