The Mexia Public Library began in 1903 amid poverty of books and space. Mrs. Harry Cravens led volunteers of the Friday Afternoon Club later called the Woman's Friday Club to secure books funds and a room at City Hall. Early efforts included a Queen of the South play that netted 25.70 dollars, with space later expanding as public support grew despite years of drought and shifting city rooms.
