Ford edged Reagan in partial Iowa delegate counts at the state convention with Ford up to 977 to Reagan 885. Reagan planned to address delegates as 21 national delegates were chosen, with 489 uncommitted and 237 yet to be selected.
The city reports steady progress on the Kings Quarters Inn new wing behind the lake with an expected Oct 1 completion. A rain gauge at the fire station records 1.10 inches in the last 24 hours, adding to recent showers. Local student Vicki Parrish named to Who's Who and plans MCC after a spring graduation. A fund at First National Bank supports Randy Shinault, injured at Fort Parker State Park, as medical bills mount. Ed Spiveys attend Southern Baptist Convention in Norfolk. Jimmy Carter captured 62 percent of 32 at large delegates at the Texas Democratic state convention adding 21 national delegates to the 92 from the May primary. California Gov. Jerry Brown and Alabama Gov. George Wallace each won one delegate. A 24 delegate controversy in Dallas was resolved by a minority report. Calvin Guest named permanent chairman with Rep. Wilmenia Delco as vice chair.
Mexia police report several crashes with Betty Ethridge hospitalized after a 12 56 p m collision at Hwy 171 and Fort Parker Drive. Ethridge and Michael Marshall involved in the two vehicle crash. Sheriff Dennis Walker’s county car damaged. Dale Benson charged with DWI. Five warrants issued for drunkenness and two for DWI after weekend incidents. No injuries in Teague Groesbeck collision at Milam and Canton.
The local summer band program moves into its second week with 75 to 80 students polishing skills for next year. The program, offering advanced training for older students, also provides a chance to catch up ahead of Mexia’s Bicentennial Celebration on July 3.
In Mexia Middle School, instructors John Ivie and Steve Fleming will choose several band members to perform during the Celebration. Students meet in small instrument groups of five for 40 minutes, with schedule shifts between weeks to accommodate all. Fleming says the program offers extra help and advanced technique work, continuing for two more weeks.
Ed Measles new Safeway Store manager completed a move Friday with his wife and son from Temple to Mexia in Spanish Hills Addition where they bought a house. He previously managed at Temple Cameron and Killeen with Safeway and served a dozen years overall with the firm. He attended Rogers schools and served three years in the Army. He and his wife Janet Bartek have a five year old son, Dale.
