Mexia plans city improvements and election of chamber president

City leaders unveil plans for a combined city hall and auditorium to address crowded facilities with votes pending. A floor election to choose the chamber of commerce president follows a large seven member committee drive and a 75 member body voting on the next leader.

United Press reports Gulfstate picked up seven men including the master and six crew members from the Schooner Geneva after it turned off West Palm Beach Florida. The Geneva hailed from Mobile and was found 20 miles southwest of Fowey Rock. Gulfstate due in port Tuesday.

Campaign Launch for Chautauqua Ticket Sales Nears

More than 20 workers organize a six day campaign starting Saturday June 19 to sell season tickets for the Redpath-Horner Chautauqua. Miss Bernice Clizbe arrives to supervise the children's work and a house to house canvass is planned. Proceeds exceeding 2000 from the program go to the public library. A children's parade and daily morning programs are planned.

Five Caldwell Men Moved for Safe Keeping

Austin dispatches report five of six men indicted on capital charges tied to 1922 ballot box riots and the Otto Lange murder have been moved from Caldwell Burleson county jail to another county by state rangers to prevent violence. Habeas corpus will seek freedom for six men. five were taken to Belton for safety after arrests.

Memorial Service Held by Mexia Odd Fellows

Mexia Odd Fellows held their annual Memorial service Sunday evening at the Baptist Church. Dr J A Held preached the sermon and Odd Fellows sat in a reserved section. The memorial honored W E Arledge who died since the last service and Mrs Mary Oliver a Rebekah lodge member.

New Officers of Men's Bible Class Elected at Baptist Church

Sunday morning the Men's Bible Class at the Baptist church elected new officers for the coming term led by president Joan I. McEvoy. The group proposed splitting the class into five divisions each with a captain to monitor attendance and monthly recognition for top groups.

Fifteen Negro Pardons Granted by Governor

The governor has granted pardons to 15 Black inmates effective June 19. Proclamations are issued today. All beneficiaries are described as friendless and penniless with good prison records. The action reported by United Press from Austin.

Magee Faces Trial Over Death Case Tomorrow

Carl Magee, famed New Mexican editor and political fighter, goes on trial in Las Vegas for manslaughter in the August 22, 1925, shooting of John Lassetter. Magee, already battle scarred by libel and contempt cases, is accused of causing Lassetter’s death while aiding a political ally in a hotel lobby incident. An earlier period of political gain and quiet followed the 1924 election, now broken as Magee confronts a charge unconnected to his crusade.

Four of New Rah Board Nominated by Coolidge

President Coolidge named four of the five members for the new railway labor mediation board. Samuel E. Winslow, ex U S representative from Massachusetts, earns a five year term. Edwin F. Morrow ex Kentucky governor gets four years. W W Hanger from Washington receives two years. Hywel Davies a labor department conciliator gets one year. Wichita Falls reports show the state Democratic executive committee approved resolutions praising Governor Miriam A. Ferguson as economical faithful and honest and urged re election. The body debated endorsing Dan Moody but voted down 15 7. Former Gov James E Ferguson attended but did not speak.

Rev Nance Leaves for Summer Course at Southwestern University

Rev. H. H. Nance pastor of the church departs Tuesday for Georgetown to attend a two week summer course at Southwestern University. He will return Saturday to resume revival services led by Rev. Lynn Squires and Rev. Bryan Keatherly. The revival has drawn large crowds and more than 25 additions are reported, with sessions at the Opera House in the afternoon.

Fire destroys Houston Paper Company plant and warehouse

A June fire of undetermined origin consumed the Houston Paper Company factory and warehouse. Loss is estimated at 75000 dollars. A general alarm was sounded and for a time the entire block housing the firm was threatened.

Janitor Killed. Boss Arrested in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO June 14 John H Johnson a 40 year old janitor employed by Express Publishing company is dead after a timber strike to the head on Friday. John Conway head janitor was arrested.
