Ottawa staged a grand reception for President Truman and Mrs. Truman and daughter Margaret as their presidential train arrived. The height of Canadian honor mirrored royal tour pomp, with a platform on Island Park Drive and a crowd that matched past royal welcomes.
C L Clark was named president of the Mexia Chamber of Commerce for the year starting July 1 1947 at a Tuesday morning meeting. Ralph Jones earlier office holder. Other officers elected include First VP C E Reed Second VP J G Coman Treasurer R J Harper and Secretary Manager E McKinnon. Directors named comprise a large list with C L Clark and J G Coman among them. The nominations committee was chaired by A C Franklin. A move to new offices in the northeast corner of the new City Hall with redecorating by the city was announced and the relocation planned for Thursday or Friday.
One of the Keys quadruplets has become a mother to a four pound five ounce girl born prematurely at Florence Nightingale Hospital by Caesarean birth. Mrs. Jack Anderson of McKinney and the baby were reported resting easily. The baby was born at 3 20 p m on Monday.
Stocks steady in dull trading with United Press notes. Bonds irregularly lower while U S governments did not trade. Curb stocks and Chicago markets show irregular activity. Silver holds at 70.35 cents a fine ounce as cotton futures stay steady and grains in Chicago show irregular wheat corn oats and barley futures.
President Truman with wife and daughter on a ceremonial trip to Ottawa marking his first Canadian visit since taking office. The House Banking Committee approved a bill to end immediately household sugar allocation and rationing while keeping sugar price controls. Rep. Ralph A. Gamble introduced the measure, with a similar Senate bill under subcommittee review. Chairman Jesse P. Wolcoit reported an overwhelming (though not unanimous) committee vote and hopeful House action in 2–3 days. Rationing for industrial agar remains unchanged.

Wildcat strikes shut 35 coal mines across two states, cutting output by over 105000 tons daily with about 17000 AFL UMW members involved.
Gov. Beauford H. Jester signed a bill permitting use of sweet natural gas in carbon black manufacture. He vetoed a rural school equalization bill expanded to add about 1 million dollars for schools that operated during the year.
In Rome Premier Alcide de Gasperi confronts strident opposition from communists and leftists in the National Assembly. Forty eight deputies were listed to speak before the confidence vote on his non communist government's economic program.
Rev. Elmer C. Carter spoke at the Mexia Lions Club meeting on Tuesday noon using as his sub The Second Mile. He urged members to commit time to community service and support their families, stressing the need to work and help others.
Central Conference announced Sunday assignments in Fort Worth naming Rev E C Carter to resume leadership at First Methodist Church Mexia. Carter, born in Chillicothe, Texas, previously led Stephenville church and studied at SMU. His wife, daughter, and son Sgt Elmer Carter Jr of Fort Ord are noted in the report.
In Detroit on June 19 the CIO United Auto Workers union and Briggs Manufacturing agreed to resume contract talks to avert a strike by 20 000 auto workers. The walkout had been scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. tomorrow after the UAW International executive board rejected a company appeal.
Moscow reports a cabinet decree to strengthen Soviet security by classifying a secret list covering Armed Forces scientific inventions natural resources foreign trade and foreign relations. It imposes up to 20 years in prison for divulging or passing documents containing such information.
