Owl Passenger Train Ends 86 Years of Service in Texas

The Owl, Texas oldest passenger train, ran its final trip from Dallas to Houston, carrying 20 passengers and five mail cars. Notables rode earlier runs including Taft during 1909. the banner proclaimed First Run 1872 Last Run 1958.

Ten Texans Drown In Rivers And Lakes During Weekend

Sudden flooding and swift currents claimed ten lives across Texas on Sunday. AtWharton and San Antonio areas, families from Wharton and San Antonio died or nearly perished while attempting to rescue others from the Colorado Guadalupe and Trinity rivers. Civil Defense boats recovered several bodies and authorities reported missing persons in irrigation canals north of McAllen.

COFC Schedules Future Farmer Tour Wednesday

The Future Farmers of America growing contest fields will be toured on Wednesday afternoon. The corn plots belong to Leo Seelinger and Dusty Martin, about three miles from Mexia on the Teague highway. The agriculture committee of the Chamber of Commerce will depart Mexia at 4:30 from the Southwestern Electric Service Company office to visit the two fields, a 30 minute tour, with a 4:60 business session first.

Japanese prosecutors indict American businessman Joseph Crowley in Tokyo on charges of causing injuries leading to the death of his brother in law Ted Jones. Sweetwater Damaged By High Winds And Storms

High winds and heavy rain plus hail lashed Sweetwater Sunday night causing damage. Reports indicate destruction to structures and infrastructure with ongoing assessment by local authorities and utility crews. No injuries reported at this time.

Mexia Girl Named Officer For MYF Conference Group

Marlis Ellis of Mexia was elected chairman of the Outreach program area in the Central Texas Conference Methodist Youth Fellowship. She will lead workshops for MYF groups and has served as a local MYF officer. The conference youth rally drew over 1,000 youths in Fort Worth.

Shiloh Homecoming Draws About 450 Attendees

Four Dallas Men Arrested Here in Connection With Thefts

Four Negro men from Dallas were arrested by the Police Department in Mexus for Friday thefts at Little Radio and TV store and Prouty Auto Supply and Sporting Goods. Two revolvers from Little’s and two guns from Prouty’s were recovered. It is unclear if all stolen goods were recovered. Arrested were Ken of G Walter Montgomery, Thomas and Bland Greer. They are held in Liverstone County Jail in Grorsbeek.

Final rites held for 9 year old Maxine Smith

Final rites were held at Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church for Maxine Smith nine year old Negro girl. Burial was in Woodland cemetery. She died Thursday in a Mexia hospital of lockjaw. Rev. O L Payne officiated. The funeral was arranged by Dorsey and Keatts Funeral Home of Mexia.

Final rites for Mrs. GT Walverton, 89, of Mart, will be held at 2 p.m. tomorrow in the Littlepage Funeral Home. She was a sister in law to Mrs. Bo P. Measeds Sr. of Mexia and aunt of Charlie Mensels and Pontiny Measeds, both of Mexia.

Funeral Services Held Today For Mrs W W McFall

Mrs W W McFall 88 died Saturday in a Terrell hospital after living in Mexia 60 years. Funeral services were held in Mexia with the Rev O C Hartzell of Spring Hill La officiating. Burial followed at Mexia City Cemetery. Survivors include four sons Marion Clyde Emmett Herbert. three sisters. seven grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services for Sallie Magness Kleinschmidt, born 1878, were held at 10:30 this morning at Burleson Chapel Wor tham. She died at Navarre Clinic Corsicana. Survived by two sons Carl and Odess Kleinschmidt, a sister Annie Tankasley of Richland, and four brothers Bret and Wallace Magness of Wortham Joe Magness of Dallas Charlie Magness of Wortham.
