Harley T. Phillips Funeral Monday
Funeral services for Harley T. Phillips 76 a former Mexia resident were held Monday at 4 p.m. in Alice with burial in Alice. He died Sunday at 11 a.m. after a long illness. A farmer, he and his family moved from Mexia to Robstown then to Alice years ago to engage in real estate. Surviving are his widow a son Odell Phillips of Alice and a daughter also in Alice. He was brother-in-law to Mrs Alma Patton of Mexia who attended from Mexia and stayed with her sister.

Hose accident kills oil worker in Panhandle Texas
A heavy hose filled with mud and water fell from its coupling during drilling operations in the Panhandle area, killing 25 year old Burtor Wayne Bradshaw. The accident occurred Sunday at the oil site and the victim resided in Panhandle.

Battle Looms On Tax Bill Okayed By Senate
A Senate committee approved a bills tax plan totaling 151 million dollars with a three cent cigarette tax hike. House sponsor Rep. George T. Hinson warned of a fight against the Senate version after passage by the Senate State Affairs Committee. Senator Dorsey Hardeman criticized the bill’s draftsmanship and said the subcommittee draft with aid from the Legislative Council discarded most of Daniels tax proposals.
