Grass fires scorch area around Mexia over weekend
Mexia firefighters battled three grass fires over the weekend. Asst Chief Donald Holmes said about one acre burned per fire. The first blaze was south of town on Belknap at 5 p.m. Saturday, with two more Sunday near Highway 84 State School cutoff and Honest Ridge by Lake Mexia.

College student Beck y Simmons joins Jan Term Russia Italy study trip
Becky Simmons Austin College senior daughter of Mr and Mrs Roy Simmons of Lake Mexia joined a January term study abroad program. She traveled from December 26 with about 60 students to Helsinki then Moscow Leningrad and Kyiv studying the Bolshevik Revolution with professors. The group spent time in tourist and citizen stores toured museums and heard lectures. They later spent six free days in Italy visiting Rome Venice and Florence and returned January 28.
