In Washington a Republican backed labor bill moves toward Senate passage with hopes of overriding a possible presidential veto. The measure, approved in the House 320 to 78, aims to curb labor disputes though President Truman’s decision remains pending.
Violent incidents in Palestine left two Arabs dead and a railroad station wrecked with a ruptured pipeline. Authorities blamed renewed Jewish underground activity as a United Nations commission era nears to investigate the Palestine issue.
Stocks listed include American Airlines 83 percent and Tex Pac C and O 29 with others like Chrysler 93 and US Steel 641. Bond activity varied as markets opened dull with irregular trades. London stocks closed easy and silver held at 70.00 cents. Grain futures showed mixed moves with wheat up and corn up, oats down, and fats steady to higher.
A handicraft exhibit by Mexia Girl Scouts and Brownies will be held Friday morning from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Mexia City Park. The work is all done by the campers during the three days of the day camp which opened Tuesday with over 100 girls in attendance. The group has engaged in singing hiking nature study campcraft dramatics and outdoor cooking as the week ends. Local citizens are invited to visit the exhibit.
Knights of Pythias members meet at 8 o'clock to elect officers for six months. Announcement by F E B Groover Chancellor Commander calls for all officers and members to attend with visiting Knights welcome. Also notes U S Argentina on friendly terms after Truman declaration.
Texas lawmakers move to put seven proposed constitutional amendments to a popular vote including keeping the $3,000 homestead exemption and funding for a UT building program. The session ends at noon tomorrow after a 24 hour rule and a late surge of bills on rural roads and education.
The Senate overwhelmingly ratified the Italian and Balkan peace treaties seen as a prelude to European peace. Italian pact approved 78 to 10. Bulgaria Hungary and Romania treaties passed by voice vote. President Truman and Secretary Marshall call it a beginning to a normal European era amid ongoing Russian and German peace terms.
James C. Wheeler, 25, an ex convict, surrendered to Fort Worth detectives at Haltom City after robbing Citizens National Bank in Weatherford. He confessed to the $3082 daytime theft and was identified by a witness as the gunman. Wheeler had previously evaded authorities for hours and had pockets with about $2950 of the loot.
The House passed by voice vote a $5.2809 billion army appropriation bill and approved an extra $40 million for new aircraft. The Appropriations Committee had reduced the army plane procurement request from $440 million to $739.6 million.
President Truman said the Kansas City vote fraud investigation should be carried through to its logical conclusion. He spoke in Washington on June 5 about pursuing the case to its end, stressing accountability.
Public assistance checks totaling 6,399,500 are being mailed this month to 214,426 persons. John H. Winters, executive director of the State Department of Public Welfare, announced averages of 28.93 for old age, 31.51 for blind recipients, and 41.72 for families with dependent children. The May increase on old age rolls brings the total to 194,848.
In a speech before the Mexia Rotary Club editor Weldon Owens of Teague Chronicle urged local newspapers and readers to join in civic duties. He warned against reader complacency and stressed responsible reporting, soil conservation, and moral living through informed engagement. Guests included Dr A L Bradford and James Neel.

Limestone County citizens crowded the Groesbeck courthouse to pay back taxes and learn how to recover property sold at last Tuesday's delinquent tax sale. Some paid with errors noted by officials while others faced 25 percent plus sale costs to reclaim their property. The program began three years ago under the County Court and an advisory committee, appointing Horace Walker as Delinquent Tax Collector.
The Limestone County Grand Jury for the 1947 May June term examined thirty three witnesses in criminal cases. Five felony and one misdemeanor indictments were returned. The county jail was found sanitary and prisoners well cared for. The jury urged seizure of unlawfully operated slot machines. Foreman J. J. Clonts presented the report.
