Dedication of Confederate Marker in Mexia Cemetery

Lydia McLane led United Daughters of the Confederacy in dedicating a Confederate marker for James Ledbetter Smith at Mexia City Cemetery starting 3 30. The event follows a 2 30 film on The Price of Peace and Freedom on Channel 10 and mentions Meals on Wheels and Senior Citizens programs. A Groesbeck Square Dance is planned Monday 8 PM at the Civic Center with Jim Thomas as caller and lessons start June 13. Open House for Limestone County Juvenile Detention Center is Monday June 13 5 7 PM on courthouse third floor, funded by the county.

Houston Space Center staff face substantial pay cuts

A Johnson Space Center spokesman told the Houston Post that 60 high ranking NASA employees will receive substantial pay cuts as part of agency belt tightening.

Two Women Die In Highway Crash Near Mexia

A Mexia woman and her Dallas sister were killed around 2 a.m. when their 1968 Oldsmobile struck a culvert three miles south of Mexia on Highway 14. Darlene Waters, 28, of Mexia and Patricia Waters, 22, of Dallas died at the scene. no skid marks were observed suggesting sleep at the wheel. Funeral arrangements are pending.

Wortham Wins 120-Day Extension on Water Loan

The Water Development Board approves a 120 day extension of a 160000 dollar loan commitment to Wortham for water system improvements. The board will buy 160000 dollars of Wortham waterworks and sewer bonds with Farmers Home Administration purchasing the remaining balance of 315000 dollars. An Almon and Co letter said the extension meets construction schedules and allows bid reception on September 15.

Mystery mummy found in Philadelphia academy crates

Officials plan an autopsy on a 2200 year old mummy discovered with an infant in the Academy of Natural Sciences. The adult, possibly a woman, will be X-rayed and dissected to learn cause of death and disease evolution, while wrappings and origin remain uncertain.

Limestone jury indicts four in Chester Brooks murder

A Limestone County Grand Jury indicted four youths for capital murder in the Jan 17 beating death of Chester Brooks, storekeeper at Coit. Ralph Leslie Maxwell 17 Belton James Edward Thomas and Walter Lewis Cook Jr 16 Temple and Daniel Wayne Maxwell 16 Temple named. three 16 year olds certified for trial as adults with appeals pending for Cook and Daniel Maxwell. Maxwell’s attorneys filed a writ of habeas corpus in Austin.

Local Social Security recipients in Limestone County will see a 5.9 percent boost, adding about $280,000 in receipts in the latter half of 1977 and nearly $559,000 more over the next year. National totals include $5.3 billion for 33.4 million beneficiaries and $265 million for 4.3 million SSI recipients.

Mexia theatre manager recalls four decades of film changes

Mrs Jewell Wood has run the Mexia Theatre for 10 years and spent forty years in the movie business beginning as the wife of a manager. She witnessed sound coming to film and later integrated sound into projectors as technologies evolved. The Oklahoma City company owns the theatre she manages in Mexia.

Guest preacher to speak at First Baptist Mexia

Doug Dickens professor from Southwestern Seminary will preach at First Baptist Church Mexia this Sunday at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. and again on June 19. Dickens from Arkansas has pastored an English speaking congregation in Manila for two years. His wife Patsy teaches in Crowley schools and is a former All American basketball player. He will show pictures of Southern Baptist mission work in the Orient on June 19.

Three Car Crash Damages Vehicles in Mexia Intersection

Mexia police logged extensive damage after a three car collision at Milam and Bailey streets at 5 20 p m Friday. Vehicles include a 1977 Monte Carlo driven by Nancy Mitchell and a 1967 Impala driven by Ruth Jackson and a 1976 LeSabre driven by Louis Adrean Seay all of Mexia.

Texas warned on energy policy harming gas industry

University of Texas economist Dr. James McKie warns that if federal energy attitudes become law Texas and other big gas producers would lose jobs taxes and output. He notes the proposed price ceiling on gas would not spur supply and expects Texas production to fall as natural gas grows scarcer and more valuable.
