Memorial Day Traffic Toll Falls Short of Warned

The four day Memorial Day holiday ended with at least 390 traffic deaths and 632 deaths overall from all accidents. California led with 33 traffic fatalities followed by Texas 31 and Ohio 25. Weather aided crashes with heavy rain and driving conditions.

Funeral Services In Mexia Tuesday For Mrs. Conrad

Mrs. J. M. Conrad 86, died at 307 East Milam Mexia, will have funeral services at Corley Chapel Tuesday at 2:30 p.m. The burial will be in Mexia city cemetery. Pallbearers include Edward Carter and Leonard Tidwell among others. She was born October 27, 1870 in Mississippi and was a Baptist church member. Survived by three daughters Mrs. Tom Fortson Rice, Mrs. Joe P. Thomas Jr. Dallas, Mrs. C. E. Pimlott Wichita Falls and one granddaughter.

The U S Weather Bureau projects occasional rain with mostly cloudy and mild conditions through Tuesday. Mexia lows near 66 and highs around 80, with last night 67 and yesterday 71. Weekend rainfall measured 1.14 inches.

Methodist Youths Attend Conference In Fort Worth

Five Mexia youths joined the Central Texas Conference Methodist Youth Fellowship meeting in Fort Worth on Saturday. Richard Perkins Corsicana district president helped nominate conference officers for 1957 58. Dianne Ellis reported the year’s finances at the conference. The rally drawn about 1000 youths featured Dr. Robert Goodrich of First Methodist Dallas as speaker. Bob Tyus Mexia MYF president was a voting delegate. Marlis Ellis Ronnie Perkins also attended with Rev. Cecil Ellis accompanying the group.

Captain Joe Kittinger of Holloman AFB New Mexico ascended to 96 000 feet in a balloon reaching a record height. He remained aloft about two hours before an equipment failure forced return. The craft touched down near Weaver Minnesota after a six hour 34 minute mission to collect scientific data and run tests.

Baylor Speech Instructor To Teach Mexia Summer Class

Mexia Chamber Manager Attends Texas Chamber Meet

J C Killingsworth Mexia Chamber of Commerce manager and Mrs Killingsworth arrived in Mineral Wells to attend the 5th Annual Convention of the Texas Chamber of Commerce Manager's Association. Governor Price Daniel will be the keynote speaker for about 400 managers and their wives at the Tuesday noon luncheon. The governor aims to boost chamber cooperation with state government. The Killingsworths plan to return to Mexia on Wednesday.

Rites Set Tuesday for Austin Phillips

Rites set for 64 year old Austin Phillips at Gideon Chapel A M E Church at noon Tuesday. Phillips died in Houston Thursday and lived in Mexia and Teague most his life. He is survived by his wife six daughters and a son.

High School Boys Charged in Grave Robbery Case

Two Texas high school youths Allan Samuel Owens and Charles Goerner were charged with grave robbery after breaking into the 90 year old grave of Albert Crawford Jones outside Austin. They admitted digging last Tuesday and taking the skull and larger bones, tossing them from their car after a weekend dance. They are free on $2,500 bonds.

Quadruplets Born in London Hospital

Mrs. Celia Philp, 28, wife of a London bookmaker, gave birth to four girls at Queen Charlotte’s Hospital in London. All babies and mother are reported well with no birth complications. Weights range from three to four pounds.
